How many times have we heard, or even said ourselves, that red and green colors do not combine! We’ll talk today about whether this is true and where such a ban came from.

Funny, but one of the most natural combinations for nature, at one time branded as real kitsch, bad taste and “traffic light”. But aren't scarlet roses or hibiscus framed by dark green leaves pleasing to the eye?

Let's figure out if red and green are not a couple, or is their happy union still possible in clothes and interiors!

Red and green: why not?

If you ask which two colors in clothes fit together the worst, many will call it red and green, although, of course, it will not do without other combinations, which for one reason or another are not to our liking.

Trendy Grenadine color: 5 stylish looks for every day

On the color wheel, red and green are opposite each other, and in color theory such colors are called complementary. Being close, they reinforce each other, which in practice always means the most contrasting and vivid combination, which may seem flashy to many.

To illustrate this taboo rooted in the subconscious, we give a fine example from Chekhov's “Three Sisters”!

Natalya Ivanovna enters; she is in a pink dress with a green belt.

Natasha: (Catchs a glance in the mirror, recovers.) It seems she combed her wow

Olga: (In a low voice, startled.) A green belt is on you! Honey, this is not good!

Natasha: Is there a sign?

Olga: No, it’s just not coming ... and somehow strange ...

Natasha (in a crying voice): Yes? But this is not green, but rather matte.

Yes, here we are talking about pink, but, from the point of view of color theory, pink is an unsaturated red with an admixture of purple, so with a clear conscience it can be included in the confrontation of red and green!

Well, and besides, even if we are not aware of this, the psychology of color always affects our perception! From childhood, we learn that red means “stop,” and green means “the path is open,” and this contradiction, the exact opposite of the messages, somehow casts doubt on us whether they can be combined at all.

Rules and prohibitions: red and green in fashion

Perhaps the most famous example of this difficult tandem is the trademark of the Gucci fashion house - red-green stripes.

The combination is regularly appearing in various forms in Gucci collections, but it must be admitted that the catchy range underlines the originality and extravagance of this fashion house. How to wear red and green if you prefer a much more moderate style?

First of all, you should sensibly assess whether these colors will suit you. It is no secret that red is not recommended for olive skin tones - it will only strengthen the “green” and you run the risk of hearing caring questions if you are not sick.

If you are ready to experiment, feel free to combine the green top and the red bottom and vice versa, but if you are not ready for radical measures, try using one of the colors as an accent. A green dress in combination with red shoes and a bag will look brighter and juicier, but at the same time you will remain within the boundaries of the moderate.

As for the shades of these two colors, we must admit that the most banal and obvious tones of red and green can really remind you of Christmas symbols: a green tree and a red Santa Claus costume.

If you are afraid that you might be mistaken for one of Santa’s elves, play with shades - khaki will look no worse with red, and pastel green goes well with a soft brick tint!
