If you know how velvet is called in English, then it is quite possible to guess what “corderoise” means!
What is cordeoise?
Corduroy translated from English - velveteen. And the word “corduroys” refers to trousers, including a denim cut, and breeches (cropped trousers) made of velveteen. In colloquial speech, "cordeoises" are sometimes abbreviated as "cords". Also in English, "corduroys" can denote the name of the stripes-hem on the velvet.
Where does this name come from?
The word corduroy itself comes from the merger of two English words: cord, which means "cord, rope", and duroy is a rough woolen fabric produced in England in the 18th century. "Cord" - because the fabric looks like a lot of strings, arranged in dense rows. And wool got into the name, since velveteen was also made from wool, including (now this is rare, for the most part, modern velveteen is made from pure cotton or from cotton with synthetic additives).
By the way, a widely spread version of the French origin of the word corduroy from "Cord du Roi" - "Royal Cloth" is considered incorrect.
Initially, velveteen was used for furniture upholstery and the manufacture of other home textiles. They began to sew clothes from it at the beginning of the twentieth century. And the trousers made of this material gained real popularity in the 1960s and 70s.
